Rotary Youth Leadership Council (RYLC) initiates Coachella Valley Rotary Youth Network & Youth Congress projects

Palm Desert, CA – In planned fashion today by the RYLC, Ashley-Anne Hobbins –Palm Desert Rotarian, COD Rotaract President and RYLC Chair met Sunday with Sergio Parra –CSUSB Palm Desert Rotaract President and RYLC Co-Chair to discuss next steps and planning in developing their youth initiatives for Coachella Valley. Ashley-Anne Hobbins developed the initiatives last summer while gaining support from Rotary District Governors, Rudy Westervelt and Chehab Elawar and Rotaract HQ. The project is considered a ‘lighthouse youth initiative’ for building Rotary Youth and general Rotary club development. ‘We expect our project to be one that Rotary International can emulate in other localities, states and regions’ says Palm Desert Rotarian Ashley-Anne. The CV Youth Leadership Council is made up of College of the Desert and CSUSB Rotaract Presidents and Vice Presidents, as well as Presidents from each desert Interact clubs. The project’s Next steps includes formalizing the online CV Rotary Youth Network -getting an online social media presence, reaching out to CV Rotary Clubs to assemble current youth advisors from each club and their Interact clubs in middle and high schools. This RYN project places valley Interact Presidents and Vice Presidents across the Coachella valley together into an interactive network. The project’s Rotary Youth Congress made up of Rotaractor and Interactor Presidents and Vice Presidents, their teacher and Rotary club advisors. The annual Congress event will take place where Rotary Youth and advisors will celebrate Rotary and Rotary Youth and more. They will work, communicate, plan projects together, build joint efforts to fund raise, to help enhance the Rotary Youth Brand, Rotary Clubs, and especially help build visibility and Rotary membership throughout the valley. ‘We can likely expect projects such as this three part Rotary Youth initiative to be the future of Rotary efforts in ‘Service Above Self’, a pathway to sustainable membership and club development’ says RYLC projects advisor Ben Hobbins. The RYLC is assembling Coachella Valley Interact Club Presidents and Vice Presidents. Each serves as a ‘junior member’ on the Rotary Youth Leadership Council, chaired by ‘senior members’, officers of collegiate Rotaract Clubs. RYLC will organize the 1st Annual Rotary Youth Congress this spring at a time TBD. The RYLC effort is being led by the project founder and chair Ashley-Anne Hobbins and CSUSB co-chair Sergio Parra in collaboration with membership of their clubs and their project advisor. ‘this is definitely a project for the ages’ states Cody Frank, Vice President Rotaract College of the Desert. ‘As Rotarians, we can expect the fruits of our efforts to bring light to the good things Rotary does every day in our communities, regions, our nation and around the world!’ says Ashley-Anne. ‘I am so happy to help develop Rotary and Rotary International youth efforts. Our cutting edge project will help lead the way’. Visit our website Visit for vacation rental jomes in the Coachella Valley.. Special Message From Friends Of CV Link

When I first heard about plans for the CV Link, a bike path traversing 50 miles between Palm Springs and Coachella, I was thrilled. Imagine being able to bike in the scenic outdoors instead of going to the gym for your daily exercise. Imagine being able to share the beauty of the desert with your guests. Imagine younger generations choosing to bike instead of drive a car – because they can do it safely. As a resident of Thunderbird Heights, I’m concerned that Rancho Mirage residents might lose out on this vision because our City Hall is engaged in a vitriolic fight against the CV link. I’ve attended meetings and tried to understand where Mayor Dana Hobart is coming from. But where he sees inconvenience, I see an opportunity. There will be a multitude of residents who will enjoy this path and the addition of something new and spectacular will bring even more tourists to our valley. Mayor Hobart has said he is trying to preserve the integrity of the developments on Highway 111, but take a look at the businesses along Highway 111, whose empty parking lots indicate they could benefit from additional customers. Some potential re-landscaping and minor changes along the Thunderbird communities and Whitewater River seem well worth it for those results. Our city’s leadership doesn’t seem to be representing people like me, who will want to buy property next to a bike path that offers them easy access to glide onto the path right from their home. Some of the issues that Mayor Hobart is raising are valid concerns. I only wish he was raising these issues from a place of support and not opposition.  Instead of drawing a line in the sand and dividing us further, I would like to see our mayor, with all his experience and intelligence, refocus his energy and help the Coachella Valley Association of Governments figure out a way to make the CV link a reality. The demographic of the Coachella Valley is changing rapidly. Riverside County is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. With growth comes change. We are no longer only a community of retirees and vacationers. We are a diverse community, and we’re seeing more and more of our children – who have grown up here – decide to stay here to live, work and raise their families. We don’t need obstructionists who will fight change; we need people who will work together to plan for those changes. As we age, we think not only of ourselves but the next generations. When we age with integrity, we exhibit a willingness to invest in the next generation – a willingness to risk, explore, produce and be open to change. Rancho Mirage City Hall has yet to embrace this change. They’ve taken our city out of the project – but maybe they’ll change course. There’s still time. And since the tourists don’t get a vote, it’s up to us residents to embrace change when we cast our votes for the April 12 election. Let’s not be shortsighted and stunt our growth potential by resisting forward momentum. Visit for vacation rental jomes in the Coachella Valley.. Vacation rentals working for Palm Desert

Vacation rentals are thus a benefit to the real estate sales market in Palm Desert.  Last year, Palm Desert home prices jumped over 14 percent, and in 2014 the jump was 18 percent.  The strength of the vacation rental market and vacation rental guests who elect to buy in the community are playing a significant role in home values,” says Realtor Jim Franklin with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. Further segments of the Palm Desert tourism economy are benefiting from vacation rentals also, such as restaurants, merchants and other attractions.  Reported sales and visitor count is at the highest in Palm Desert tourism history. Vacation rental tourism is additionally a major employer for the community and it contributes in excess of $100 million to the local economy annually.  Patrick Service, president of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce, states “Palm Springs has exciting lodging options for every visitor.”  As an example, approximately 33 pecent of non-resident attendees to the Palm Springs International Film Festival choose to stay in a vacation rental. Specifically as to the transient occupancy tax generated by tourism visitors – the tax visitors’ pay for short-term lodging – 20 percent of overall TOT is derived from the vacation rental industry.  In total, Palm Springs benefited with $5.5 million in TOT from vacation rentals in the last fiscal year. These revenues pay for essential community services such as public safety, parks, streets and senior services. Hoteliers similarly recognize the benefit of vacation rental tourism. According to Aftab Dada, general manager of the Palm Springs Hilton and Chairman of PS Resorts, “For 30 years Palm Springs has been a leader in vacation rentals. Currently, we have 1,600 registered vacation rental owners paying in excess of $350,000 in annual fees to the city – that is close to a $6 million direct benefit to Palm Springs when including TOT – more than 6 percent  of our city’s total budget.” With the strength of vacation rental tourism we recognize the need for tough laws regulating the activities of vacation rental owners, agents and guests. Palm Springs, however, has a vacation rental ordinance that is recognized and copied in many cities, both locally and statewide.  The Palm Springs vacation rental ordinance was first introduced 2008 with input from city leaders, neighborhoods, City Council, law enforcement and other stakeholders.  For the majority of the year, 98 percent of vacation rentals operate without any problems for neighbors or their neighborhood.  The ordinance established a 24-hour hotline for neighbors to call with vacation rental concerns and provides a rapid response for resolving those problems.  When the hotline is called, the average response time is 20 minutes. Even with a 98% success rate, Palm Springs continues to be a leader on vacation rental regulation by the anticipated hiring a full-time staff person that is solely dedicated to overseeing ordinance enforcement. Creation of desert national monuments safeguards vital bird habitats in Palm Desert

Palm Desert,CA – Millions of California birds will be among the beneficiaries of three new national monuments created by executive order today. At the request of California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Pres. Barack Obama carved out three areas totaling approximate 1.8 million acres for monument status, linking the San Bernardino National Forest to Joshua Tree National Park, and wrapping around the Mojave National Preserve to the Nevada border. “Some areas are too important to develop, and these areas of the California desert – home to more than 250 species of birds – are among them,” said president and CEO of the National Audubon Society David Yarnold. “Since Congress won’t act to protect this natural treasure, it’s up to President Obama to keep safe the places these birds call home.” Six years ago, Feinstein introduced the California Desert Conservation and Recreation Act, which would designate these three areas as national monuments. But recently, as her legislation became mired in Congress, she reportedly asked Obama to use his power under the Antiquities Act to designate the three desert monuments, bypassing Congress. “California’s deserts are natural treasure right alongside our beaches and mountains, full of remarkable vistas, birds and other wildlife,” said Audubon California Executive Director Brigid McCormack. “These desert habitats are worth fighting for – and I want to thank Sen. Feinstein for her tireless advocacy on behalf of California deserts, and the President for recognizing that they need to be protected.” Visit for vacation rental jomes in the Coachella Valley.. Bird of the Month: BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON

For beginning birders there is often identification confusion brought about by differences between juvenal and adult plumages of some species. A classic example is the White-crowned Sparrow, where novice birders can see wintering flocks containing birds with the striking black-and-white striped crowns of adults, accompanied by young birds with duller, brown and tan stripes on the crowns. Similarly, Black-crowned Night-Herons have juvenal plumages that may lead novices to think they are looking at two different species (see photos). The Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) occurs on every continent except Antarctica and Australia. It breeds across the entire United States, in all but the driest habitats. Some populations migrate, or at least disperse short distances, but birds nesting in California are mostly sedentary. In those populations in the U.S. that migrate, many simply move farther south in the U.S., while others winter as far south as Mexico and Central America. In southern California, Black-crowned Night-Herons are known (or suspected) to nest at localities such as the Salton Sea, many sites along the coast, Lake Mathews, Lake Norconian, San Jacinto Wildlife Area, Mojave Narrows, and the Prado Basin. The species nests in colonies that can number as high as 500 pairs, but in southern California it is not unusual to find nesting sites that have only a few pairs. Nests are most often in trees, but can be in large shrubs or marsh vegetation. The majority of nests are at heights of 20 to 40 feet, but some can be only a few feet from the ground. Like most herons, the nests are platforms of sticks. Clutch sizes vary from 1 to 6 eggs per nest, with most studies showing averages of 3 to 4. Eggs have a smooth, matte finish, and are greenish-blue. Both sexes incubate the eggs, which hatch in about 23 days. Following hatching, the young leave the nest after about 30 days, but cannot fly. Rather, they move through vegetation on foot. At about six weeks of age they are able to fly, and then begin to accompany adults to feeding areas. Most food is aquatic, such as fish, crayfish, clams, mussels, squid, and aquatic insects, but they also take terrestrial prey such as snakes, lizards, small mammals, and birds. As their name implies, they feed from early evening hours to morning. Even during winter the Black-crowned Night-Heron exhibits colonial habits. It is common during Christmas Bird Counts in our area to find day-roosting birds in groups. In the area that I count for the Salton Sea North CBC there is an area surrounding ponds at a hunting club that routinely contains from 50 to 100 roosting Black-crowned Night-Herons. Things to know about Acrisure Arena

Before you head out to enjoy an event at this new venue, here are tips and insights into what your fan experience will be like. The main entrance on the east side of the building will focus on creating an indoor-outdoor feel featuring an outdoor food court. Since construction began in June 2021, you’ve likely driven by Acrisure Arena perched on the north side of Interstate 10 just off the Cook Street exit and viewed the immense structure rising from ground level, or you’ve seen the renderings that depict people milling in and out of the multi-purpose venue. Fans will gain their first real look inside Acrisure Arena when comics Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock entertain in the round on Dec. 14 followed by The Doobie Brothers (Dec. 15), Grupo Firme (Dec. 16), and then the Coachella Valley Firebirds’ first hockey game on Dec. 18. There are 2,950 parking spaces including 400 plus for VIP. John Bolton, senior vice president of entertainment and general manager of the arena has decades of experience around venues like Acrisure Arena. In fact, he’s helping the parent company, Oak View Group, develop grand opening and entertainment plans for eight new arena projects. He’s seen Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert go from an architect’s concept to reality, and he likes what he sees. “I think to me some of the interior spaces are even better than I thought,” Bolton says. “I think being in the bowl (the main seating area) you really understand how wonderful this is going to be from an artist’s perspective and a fan perspective. Just knowing that you’re going to be so close to the action, so close to the artist when they’re playing based on that basically one lower bowl design, I think is really, really incredible. “I’m really impressed with all of the work on the exterior of the building and how it fits in with the landscape around the facility as well as the beautiful mountains that are there. I think it fits well from that perspective and also from a color perspective, and I think our friends at the Berger Foundation have done a really, really amazing job in all the parking lots and the landscaping that’s coming on board as it relates to that part of the facility as well.” Hockey drove this arena to Greater Palm Springs where the Coachella Valley Firebirds will play home games through mid-April. PARKING There will be 500 VIP parking spots on the west end of the arena and 2,500 spaces around the south and east ends. If needed, there are 1,000 additional spaces available at Xavier Prep High School with a shuttle service to the arena. Kiosks at the arena will allow you to pay after you park rather be held up by an attendant asking for payment. Using Patriot One’s SmartGateway, fans will walk through screening areas that detect concealed guns, knives, and other related threat objects, and gives customers a green arrow to proceed through or a red warning to staff that shows where the detected threat object is located on the customer. “We think this frictionless, smart walkthrough system makes it really, really easy for people to enter,” Bolton says. TICKETING All tickets are digital and sent to your cell phone, so don’t bring a printout, a screenshot, or another method and expect to get in. The barcode is scanned on your ticket to gain access to the event. JUST FOR THE HOLIDAYS You’ll likely see the 54-foot Christmas tree from the freeway that sits by the main entrance. FOOD Before you even step into the arena, there will be a food court area by the main entrance that will include five restaurants. The specific restaurants will be named this week, Bolton says. “Obviously we’re taking advantage of the weather and extending our indoor-outdoor,” he adds. SEATING Acrisure Arena’s capacity is 11,000 with roughly 10,000 seats for hockey. There are 20 VIP suites that surround the lower bowl seating area. “It’s pretty clear to me that there’s not a bad seat in the house,” Bolton says. “You’re entering a ground level and then going down to your seat.” One seating area to consider. The very back row of seats is separated by a counter where the customer can plant a drink. The seating is similar to a bar seat, but it gives you some space between you and the person next to you compared to regular arena seating. ACOUSTICS The Doobie Brothers will be the first band to play in the arena on Dec. 15 followed by Grupo Firme on Dec. 16 and Maroon 5 on Dec. 31. The technology in this area has changed dramatically over the years, but workers have installed 10,000 square feet of acoustic lapidary panels, Bolton says. “The fact that we don’t have a very high elevated upper bowl where sound bounces off and then comes back down will create a much better sound overall for our events. The goal is to make sure the sound system is really, really awesome. That plays a part in people’s enjoyment.” The Chairman’s Club At the west end of the arena, there will be a giant screen broadcasting the action for hockey and also be part of the musical acts that appear. In addition, there will be a wraparound ribbon screen surrounding the bowl seating. Many of the concession areas have TVs to keep track of the action. CHAIRMAN’S CLUB 29 There is a special room located in the arena’s lower level where Chairman’s Club members can hang out complete with comfy lounge furniture, bar and food offerings, and plenty of TVs to view the event. ARENA WITH A VIEW Check out the north and south bar areas. They are open space areas where you can wander away from the bar and look down at the hockey arena. It’s by far the most dramatic viewing area. Might not be as good for concerted since the bars are parallel to the stage, but COMMUNITY
