California Desert Chorale Concludes Concert Season

On December 11 and 18, the California Desert Chorale closed its winter season with a finale performance of the “Holiday Singin’ & Swingin” live concert. Led by Artistic Director Tim Bruneau and Principal Accompanist Bruce Magnum, the choral program featured classical pieces and holiday favorites. The concert took place at 3 PM at the Hope Lutheran Church in Palm Desert. The California Desert Chorale live choral concert included festive and fun performances of “A Doo Wop Christmas” by Kirby Shaw; “Swing into Christmas” by J. Garland W. Kent & J. Livingston, arranged by Mac Huff; “The Chanukah Song (We Are Lights)” by Stephen Schwarts, arranged by Nowlin; and many more. Special features of the performance included 32 choristers arranged by soprano, alto, tenor, and bass; 11 Instrumentalists with chamber orchestra including violins, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, harp, trumpets, and percussion; and an audience sing-along portion with a medley of holiday favorites including “Deck The Halls;” “Joy to the World;” “We Wish you A Merry Christmas;” and more. Lyrics were provided along with holiday concert translations. The California Desert Chorale exists to bring joy to singers and audiences alike by providing a wide variety of choral and other inspiring vocal musical performances. The California Desert Chorale will hold the 2023 Scholarship competition, beginning on Saturday, January 28, at 1 pm with a public voice class for all participants. A high degree of personal commitment is required for members to meet the California Desert Chorale’s standards. The Chorale has Monday night rehearsals from September through April; periodic Saturday morning rehearsals; very busy concert week schedules, and occasional community service performances. A substantial portion of the group’s concert repertoire is sung from memory. Therefore, significant individual effort is required between rehearsals. Membership auditions occur prior to the Chorale’s concert season and intermittently during the season, at the discretion of the Artistic Director. All those interested in Chorale membership must perform an individual audition with the Artistic Director prior to acceptance. Current members may be required to re-audition at any point if the Artistic Director perceives the need. Each auditioning singer must perform a memorized solo work from the classical, folk song, musical theater, American standard or sacred music repertoire. Typical audition material includes operatic arias, art songs, and ballads by George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, etc. The musical selection one chooses to use for the audition should readily reflect good breath support, consistent tone quality, accurate tuning, and interpretive skill. Those auditioning must also provide printed sheet music for their audition song. Each auditioning singer will be asked to discuss his or her prior experience as both a choral and solo singer. Some auditioning singers may be required to work privately on specific technical and interpretive skills as a qualification of their membership, at the discretion of the Artistic Director. The California Desert Chorale is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization. The California Desert Chorale is composed of both professional and amateur singers who bring a wide variety of choral and solo experience to the ensemble. For more information on how to support and be involved with the chorale, call (760) 346-4933.

Students at Palm Desert Senior High School concluded the entire year with outcomes well above the statewide average

Palm Desert, CA – Students at Palm Desert Senior High School concluded the entire year with outcomes well above the statewide average and organized with Shmoop for the Smarter Balanced checks. That’s where Shmoop comes in. Shmoop (http://www.shmoop.com), a digital manager recognized for its award-winning test-prep and qualified online classes, delivers Frequent Key test prep for both Wiser Balanced (SBAC) and PARCC checks. Ofcourse, Shmoopis components are anything but frequent: they will have demonstrated time and proven effects time again. Juniors at Palm Desert Senior School employed Shmoop’s SBAC test-prep, and their rankings pulled the flip flops off the Colorado typical: 80% of PDHS juniors met or exceeded ELA expectations, compared to 56PERCENT statewide; and 41PERCENT of PDHS juniors fulfilled or exceeded math expectations, in comparison with 29% statewide based on the California Department of Knowledge. For your toe-displays out-there, that’s a 24% and 12% edge to q, respectively and the state common for ELA, after utilizing Shmoop. Assistant principal Charles Mazet features a lot of PDHS’s SBAC success to Shmoopis assets. ” Shmoop helped our pupils to get more comfortable with the evaluation, and Everyone was so upset regarding the fresh examination,” he said. ” the particular examination is mirrored by It so students may enjoy the process that is researching and believed what they got into.” Visit for vacation rental jomes in the Coachella Valley.. Art on display in Palm Desert

It was time once again to take my annual trip down from the cold mountains to the warmth of the desert floor and look up something interesting in Palm Springs. In fact, it was a visit to Palm Desert — and people there don’t like everyone using the generic Palm Springs term any more than residents of Beverly Hills like to be considered being from Los Angeles. It has been almost exactly fours years since I last visited the Palm Springs Art Museum, at that time it had just opened. The museum has five entities: The art museum in Palm Desert; the main museum in Palm Springs, which also contains the Annenberg Theater; then there is the Museum of Architecture, also in Palm Springs; and finally the Frey House II. There truly is a lot to see under the banner “Palm Springs Art Museum.” The Palm Desert location is a small entity and it is easy to enjoy all of its exhibits. “It is quite intimate,” said Arlene Amick, the managing director who has been with the facility since its opening in 2012. “Not only do we have an exhibition of art here, but outside we have a sculpture garden with 16 different pieces on show.” The Faye Sarkovsky Sculpture Garden is a delightful place to spend time in this quiet preserve of culture alongside busy Highway 111. Not only are there pieces of art to enjoy, but the garden itself is full of cacti, flowers and desert palms. I liked the two life-sized Polynesian type heads, called “Laura and Awilda,” by Juame Plensa. They were different from another new arrival, “Eroded Column” by Philip K. Smith III, which was a geometric piece standing about 10 feet tall in its own small garden bed. The garden is not just used for art, it has become a center point for the community. “We find the museum has become a community cultural hub,” said Amick. “We have a big selection of activities that people can enjoy. There are yoga classes, and we have collaboration with the regular farmers’ market that draws lots of people.” A particular favorite is the Galen First Friday events, which bring together music in the form of live concerts and also films and performance art. These events occur the first Friday of every month. Two years ago, the museum became a free entry establishment and this policy is carried through to entry for special events, although costs can be incurred with the refreshment stalls and other vendors that are available. Inside the museum, which used to be a visitors’ center until its conversion in 2012, art is displayed in several small galleries. I was drawn to the Roy Lichtenstein work with his characteristic comic book format. It was nice to be able to walk right up to the surface of the painting, which showed his use of dots to build up color. If you drive along Highway 111 from Palm Springs, it’s easy to spot the Palm Desert Museum. On the corner of the property is a tall red sculpture by Fletcher Benton who was born in 1931. Originally it was black, but the directors felt it would stand out better in red. “I had to call the artist to see if he would give permission. I was quite nervous about it,” Amick said. But permission was granted and the tall slim figure acts like a signpost that you have arrived at this center for the arts in Palm Desert.
