Palm Desert High School

STEM Academies Launched

Palm Desert, CA – Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics (STEM) education has been a hot topic in recent years, as politicians and business leaders worry over the lack of qualified workers in science and engineering. Although much public discussion focuses on higher education and high school curriculum, educators and others are realizing that for students to really get hooked on the sciences, STEM instruction must start early.  Traditionally, students hit the books to find their information and may not have many opportunities to apply that learning in hands-on or real-world experiences. A STEM education breaks away from that tradition, engaging students directly with the course material as an incentive to dig deeper, conduct research, and apply their learning in rich and relevant contexts. When students understand all the advantages a STEM education has to offer, when they understand how active learning applies to the world and to their lives, when they make discoveries that put theory into action—eyes are opened to a rich array of career and life opportunities.  Two exciting new magnet schools are about to open in the City of La Quinta beginning in the 2016-2017 school year. With a new emphasis comes a fresh “rebranding” as the schools consider names that announce their transformation. Current frontrunners are, Discovery STEM Academy: La Quinta (grades 6-8) and Discovery STEM Academy: Truman (grades K-5). These free public schools will approach teaching and learning using a STEM philosophy that includes: Grounding STEM education in “real life” problems. Student participation in original research projects Student internships and mentorship with STEM professionals In general, studies show that specialized STEM schools make a difference. Their graduates pursue STEM fields in college at a rate of nearly 50% higher than that of the other students. Compared with the national average, nearly 20% more selective STEM graduates earn a STEM-related postsecondary degree within four years of graduating from high school. (successfulstemeducation.org) STEM is not just for scientists anymore. In today’s economy, almost any job with decent pay requires STEM skills, and many jobs require advanced STEM abilities. But far too many U.S. residents are unprepared for the occupational demands of the 21st Century. Formerly a world leader in math and science achievement, the United States is struggling to keep up. Fewer students enroll in STEM courses and master STEM content than young people in other countries. The problem is now no mere point of pride—the lack of knowledge undermines the nation’s economic productivity and global competitiveness. The STEM academies at Truman and La Quinta will respond to this challenge by offering rigorous curricula, uniquely trained and prepared teachers, more hands-on experiences, and state-of-the-art resources. Once implemented, these schools will be a beacon for other schools seeking to encourage young people to think deeply to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world, both today and tomorrow. For more information, or to enroll your child in a Desert Sands Unified School District Discovery STEM Academy, please contact the Child Welfare and Attendance office at 760-771-8612. Check out www.dsusd.us for additional information. DSUSD is an open enrollment district. Transfer requests are accepted through March 31 Homes for sale around the Palm Desert Area

School Sign for Palm Desert High School

Palm Desert High School WASC Accreditation… What is it?

Palm Desert, CA – Thanks to the Rotarians who were able to sign the “best wishes” card to Palm Desert High School at our February 23 meeting. In  answer to those who asked, “Whatʼs WASC,” hereʼs an explanation: WASC is the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Itʼs the body that certifies schools at all levels that are living up to high academic standards and effective teaching strategies for all students. Every three to six years, all school stakeholders conduct a year-long self-study which they submit to a visiting team of educators and administrators from the Southern California region. A high-functioning school will report all current successes, and then outline how they are pursuing continuing improvement.  School self-studies generally cite partnerships with community groups in their report, and so itʼs good to have a Palm Desert Rotary “best wishes” card on display. Palm Desert Highʼs visiting team will be on campus February 29 through March 3, visiting every classroom, interviewing students, staff, and parents. On the final day of the visit, the visiting  team will report on aspects of the self-study they could verify, and what aspects appear to need more attention. A poorly functioning school might receive a 1-year accreditation with a full re-visit. Top schools such as PDHS usually earn a 6-year accreditation term, usually with a brief revisit at the 3-year point.  Weʼll invite PDHS Principal and fellow PD Rotarian Robert Hicks to report on his schoolʼs WASC visit soon. This is really a pretty special palm tree wall sticker. I had mini plungers in every single room and also the large plungers outside within the garage. Then I found the joy of riding, in addition to sightseeing. Palm Desert has become popular in the past decade and there are a number of interesting facts connected to the city.  Las Vegas is a couple of hours away to the east, also. In El Cajon you’ll find a number of the nicer houses together with scenery. On South Shore you’ll locate the casinos. I’m giving both the frequent name in addition to the botanical (Latin) name, just if your neighborhood plant store doesn’t make use of the similar typical name. If you’re camping outdoors (and after reading this, you may not ever desire to camp outdoors within the desert again!) Now if you’re similar to me, you won’t be staying in a single place within the desert heat. Since then I’ve grown to adore the desert and even miss it. It seems as though it should be called Narnia for how it’s surrounded by the desert. Blending has become the most essential step in painting sunsets. The staff there’s friendly and beneficial, and there’s a family atmosphere almost always which I love. Desert biomes may vary in proportion in addition to in heat. This is the largest trick to staying cool within the desert even whenever the weather is quite hot. It doesn’t just makes the tree look much better, in addition, it lessens your odds of harboring desert scorpions. During the summertime, it really is in full leaf. Scorpions will usually be active through the night during the summertime, as well as in the winter and spring months they’re going to come out during the day.
